“28 Years After Uncovered a Meta Hint You May Have Missed”

Danny Boyle makes a grand comeback in “28 Years Later,” a zombie thriller that has taken the box office by storm, raking in $30 million in the U.S. and $60 million globally. Enthusiasts of “28 Days Later” are analyzing every aspect, from its integration of iPhones to the possible retcon of “28 Weeks Later” and its outrageous conclusion. Yet, there’s an element in the finale that some may have overlooked.

Warning: Spoilers for the concluding scene of “28 Years Later”—specifically, its link to notorious British public figure and sex offender Jimmy Savile, as uncovered in a posthumous police inquiry.

At the conclusion of the film, protagonist Spike (Alfie Williams) finds himself trapped by the infected, but a new character named Jimmy (Jack O’Connell) swoops in to save the day with his crew of Merry Men, executing parkour to a rock rendition of the “Teletubbies” theme. The analysis of the ending omitted the allusion to Jimmy Savile, noticeable in Jimmy’s look: shoulder-length blonde locks, athletic wear, and gold accessories.

Savile, recognized for his charitable works and as the host of “Jim’ll Fix It,” was posthumously accused of child sexual abuse. Allegations surfaced after his passing in 2011, revealing his associations with individuals like Margaret Thatcher and King Charles. The BBC faced accusations of concealing these claims, with reports suggesting missed chances to halt Savile’s actions. More than 450 victims, ranging from ages 5 to 75, have come forward.

During a “28 Years Later” press event, Eammon Jacobs inquired from Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland about the Savile reference. Garland pointed out the trilogy’s focus on selective memory and distorted histories. Boyle mentioned that Savile’s image is deeply embedded in pop culture and athletic apparel. Garland characterized him as a “kaleidoscope in a trippy, messed-up manner.”

Jimmy’s similarity to Savile implies that Spike is not with trustworthy allies. Nonetheless, given the film’s chronological context, young Jimmy likely emulated Savile’s charitable image, oblivious to the sinister accusations. Spike, not having experienced life prior to his existence, misses the reference.

“28 Years Later: Bone Temple” promises to deliver more of Spike, Jimmy, and the reappearance of Cillian Murphy. Fans are eagerly anticipating ticket sales.

“28 Years Later” is currently showing in theaters. “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” is slated for release on January 16, 2026.
