The conflict between Donald Trump and Elon Musk has intensified into a barrage of social media insults, featuring grave allegations, threats to cancel contracts, and trivial name-calling on Trump’s Truth Social and Musk’s X.
Late-night hosts such as Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers have been dissecting each phase of this public drama. The previously collaborative dynamic between the U.S. president and the wealthiest individual in the world has unraveled, with both sides hurling accusations during press conferences and online. Trump has warned about removing Musk’s government contracts, whereas Musk has proposed retiring SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft and asserted, “Donald Trump is in the Epstein files.”
“In a mere three hours, they transitioned from Elon criticizing the bill, to Trump threatening to strip away Elon’s contracts, to Elon implying that Trump could be a pedophile,” Meyers noted during his “A Closer Look” segment on Thursday’s Late Night. “If we take you at your word, Elon, you already had knowledge of that — and it wasn’t a dealbreaker.”
Meyers wrapped up by reflecting on the larger ramifications.
“It’s evident that neither of these individuals truly held any beliefs. Elon poured nearly $300 million into getting Republicans elected, and now he’s taken aback by their conduct. On the other hand, Trump exploited Elon to regain influence. In a sense, they were justified. Observing these individuals dismantle one another is both grand and stunning,” Meyers quipped, ending his thought with a clip of Trump saying “beautiful.”
