The Schwartz has risen! Mel Brooks’ beloved cult film Spaceballs is getting a sequel 40 years after its initial release. It’s still unclear if it will carry the title Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, as the original film humorously suggested.
Amazon MGM Studios revealed that the sequel will hit theaters in 2027, accompanied by a video of Brooks talking about more Spaceballs. “After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans desire?'” Brooks states. “But instead, we’re creating this movie.”
The video emphasizes how the franchise environment has shifted since Spaceballs debuted in 1987, mentioning three Star Wars trilogies, numerous spin-off television series, and other colossal franchises, including “36 MCU films featuring two different Robert Downey Jr.’s.”
Where does Spaceballs 2 slot into the franchise universe? Is it a sequel? A prequel? A reboot? According to its tagline, it’s “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
While the plot particulars of Spaceballs 2 remain confidential, there’s plenty to be enthusiastic about. Brooks will reprise his role as Yogurt, the Yoda-like figure from Spaceballs who motivates hero Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) to wield the Schwartz.
As reported by Deadline, Pullman is also confirmed to return in Spaceballs 2, along with Rick Moranis, who portrayed the villainous Dark Helmet. This role would signify Moranis’ comeback to live-action cinema after a 28-year absence.
In addition to the returning Spaceballs cast, Spaceballs 2 will feature Keke Palmer. Josh Gad is also slated to be a part of the cast. Gad co-wrote the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Josh Greenbaum (Will & Harper, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) will direct.
Spaceballs 2 will be released in theaters in 2027.
