John Oliver Cleverly Responds to AI Spam

If you have been browsing the internet lately, you might have come across “AI slop” — a phrase referring to the mass-produced, AI-generated content that has become widespread on social media.

In a segment from Last Week Tonight, John Oliver addresses the issues associated with this new form of spam, ranging from counterfeit images on Pinterest to AI misinformation regarding wars and natural disasters that impact first responders.

“AI slop can be somewhat lucrative for its creators, exceedingly profitable for platforms using it to enhance engagement, and alarmingly detrimental to the idea of objective reality,” Oliver claims. “I’m not suggesting that some of this isn’t amusing — but it can be potentially hazardous, and the technology is based on the efforts of actual artists. Any pleasure derived from amusing AI slop is lessened by the knowledge that it was made by appropriating someone’s hard work.”

Oliver’s recommendation? “Produce genuine art by mimicking AI slop.” He engages chainsaw sculptor Michael Jones, whose creations have inspired viral AI images, to create a wooden sculpture based on what Oliver considers “the finest and most puzzling piece of slop generated to date.”

The end result is undeniably a masterpiece.
