If you were a customer of AT&T from 2019 to 2024, you may soon qualify for a settlement payment. AT&T has consented to a $177 million settlement to resolve two class action lawsuits related to data security breaches.
The settlement terms were validated by the courts on Friday, June 20, enabling AT&T to initiate the distribution of payments. The first group, impacted by a data breach in 2024, will receive $149 million. Another group, affected by a breach in 2019, will obtain $28 million.
Per court documents, AT&T will initially reimburse those who incurred direct damages from the data breach and then allocate the remaining funds to all affected customers. AT&T is also providing complimentary credit monitoring services to those impacted.
Information on the AT&T Data Breaches
The initial breach came to light in March 2024, revealing records of 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former customers exposed on the dark web. AT&T was unable to ascertain the method of data leakage but provided free credit monitoring for affected customers. The records originated from 2019 and prior.
On April 19, 2024, AT&T uncovered another major data breach, which was reported to the SEC. An unauthorized entity gained access to AT&T’s Snowflake environment, downloading call logs and text messages from almost all customers between May 1 and Oct. 31, 2022, in addition to some communications on Jan. 3, 2023.
The 2024 breach had such extensive ramifications that its impact continues to be felt in 2025.
Criteria for Compensation
If you were impacted by the breaches of 2019 or 2024, AT&T will reach out to you with guidance in the upcoming months.
Between August and October of this year, AT&T will send settlement notifications to those affected, explaining how to submit a claim for your portion of the settlement. If you do not receive a notification by Oct. 17, you may want to contact AT&T to verify your eligibility. An online claim form is generally available, though it is not at this time.
Distribution Timeline
Payments are expected to be issued sometime after Dec. 3, 2025, although the precise timeline remains unclear.
