Emma Stone and filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos continue to produce remarkable work together. Their partnership began with the 2018 movie “The Favourite,” which brought Stone an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress and Lanthimos a nomination for Best Director. They followed up with the 2023 fantasy “Poor Things,” which earned Stone her second Academy Award for Best Actress and led to another Best Director nomination for Lanthimos. In 2024, they unveiled the anthology film “Kinds of Kindness,” having previously collaborated on the 2022 short film “Bleat.”
“Kinds of Kindness” marked the introduction of Jesse Plemons to Lanthimos’ works, earning him the Best Actor Prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival for his portrayals in the film’s three fables. Lanthimos, Stone, and Plemons have now come together again for the comedy “Bugonia,” which is directed by Lanthimos and penned by Will Tracy (“The Menu”).
“Bugonia,” a remake of the 2003 South Korean film “Save the Green Planet!,” narrates the story of conspiracy theorist and beekeeper Teddy Gatz (Plemons), who is convinced that aliens are masquerading as influential humans and are plotting an invasion. He suspects Michelle Fuller, the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, to be one of them and, along with fellow theorist Aidan Delbis, abducts her in a bid to save the world.
The teaser trailer for “Bugonia” hints at more of Lanthimos’ trademark dark comedy and eccentricity. The film also stars Alicia Silverstone and Stavros Halkias. “Bugonia” is set to premiere in limited theaters on Oct. 24, followed by a wider release on Oct. 31.
