Superman Conclusion Clarified: Consequences for Upcoming Sequels and Spin-Offs

Superman makes a comeback with exhilarating action, super-powered companions, formidable adversaries, and a star-studded cast including David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced.

The James Gunn-directed Superman not only initiates a new era of DC films but also teases a possible sequel in its closing moments just before the credits appear.

Let’s delve into what lies ahead for Superman and his community of friends and family under Gunn and Warner Bros. Spoilers are forthcoming.

Is a Superman 2 on the horizon?

Superman concludes with the hero still upright, making a sequel seem likely. Despite Lex Luthor (Hoult) being last seen vanquished and in police custody, his influence and wealth suggest a return is possible. Nonetheless, Gunn, co-chair of the revitalized DC Universe alongside Peter Safran, has yet to confirm Superman 2.

In January 2023, Gunn revealed his DC lineup, which includes The Batman 2, a Swamp Thing film, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on Tom King’s 2022 comic mini-series. The title has since been abbreviated to Supergirl.

Everything we know about the Supergirl film:

After saving the day in Superman, Clark heads back to his Fortress of Solitude, where he chats with his superbot Gary (Alan Tudyk) and observes Krypto play. The super pooch goes wild when his true owner, Supergirl, Clark’s cousin Kara, portrayed by Milly Alcock, appears.

The film hinted at this when Clark informed Lois Lane (Brosnahan) that Krypto is not his dog, but a “foster” arrangement. Imagine her surprise when she discovers the super cousin! While Superman was busy protecting Earth, Supergirl enjoyed a party on a planet with a red sun, allowing the super crew to indulge. Now, she returns, bringing her party spirit and her dog. This suggests that the Supergirl film may pick up right where Superman concludes.

What’s the storyline of the Supergirl film?

In January 2024, Variety outlined the plot: “Supergirl journeys across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog. During her travels, she encounters a young woman named Ruthye and embarks on a quest for revenge.”

Deadline reported that Eve Ridley has been cast as Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young alien warrior seeking revenge after Krem of the Yellow Hill murders her father. Matthias Schoenaerts will portray Krem.

Craig Gillespie is set to direct, with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. Jason Momoa is joining as Lobo, an alien bounty hunter, and David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Kara’s father and Clark’s uncle.

Much of Supergirl‘s narrative takes place off-planet, which may mean that David Corenswet does not reprise his role as Superman in this spinoff. However, given Gunn’s affinity for cameos, Superman’s appearance seems possible.

When will Supergirl be released in theaters?

Supergirl is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
