Murderbot Conclusion: David Dastmalchian Talks About Gurathin and Murderbot’s Poignant Goodbye

David Dastmalchian, recognized for “Life of Chuck” and “Late Night with the Devil,” characterized the filming of Apple TV+’s sci-fi series “Murderbot” as an “extraordinarily emotional journey.” Dastmalchian portrays Dr. Gurathin, an augmented individual in the PresAux survey team. In contrast to his open and affectionate teammates, Gurathin is more aloof and skeptical of the security android Murderbot, enacted by Alexander Skarsgård. This skepticism is rooted in Gurathin’s previous mistreatment by Murderbot’s Company, which resulted in his addiction to substances.

“Gurathin is, much like me, someone who has faced addiction and a compulsive disorder where exerting control becomes an addiction,” Dastmalchian expressed during an interview with Mashable’s Say More. Gurathin ensures safety by keeping his loved ones close and managing his environment. This need for control is apparent in the early episodes as he interrogates Murderbot, attempting to unveil its mysteries. By the conclusion of the season, Gurathin develops feelings for Murderbot, and when the Company erases Murderbot’s memories, Gurathin discovers a method to retrieve them.

Dr. Mensah, portrayed by Noma Dumezweni, purchases Murderbot’s contract to bring it to the Preservation Alliance for autonomy. Nevertheless, Murderbot opts for independence and sets off into space. Prior to departing, Gurathin proposes to guide Murderbot around Preservation, recognizing the shift from Company dominance to liberation. Murderbot, with tears glistening in its eyes, responds, “I need to check the perimeter,” signifying its desire for freedom. Gurathin affirms, “You need to check the perimeter,” marking their evolution from opponents to shared understanding.

Dastmalchian reflected on the importance of the scene, highlighting the profound bond with the “Murderbot” cast and crew, including Skarsgård. He described the moment as a representation of human experiences, such as relationship endings and acceptance. Despite the poignant farewell, “Murderbot” will persist, as Apple TV+ has confirmed its renewal for a second season. Although Gurathin does not feature in the second book of Martha Wells’s “The Murderbot Diaries,” he returns later, suggesting a potential reunion with Murderbot and PresAux.

“Murderbot” is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+.
