Google intends to consolidate Android and ChromeOS into a single operating system. Sameer Samat, the president of the Android Ecosystem at Google, revealed this during an interview with TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff, mentioning, “We’re going to be merging ChromeOS and Android into a unified platform,” although no specific timeline was given. The discussion also touched on various Android-related subjects, including updates for Android 16, which feature enhanced customization and the incorporation of Gemini. The potential integration of Android and ChromeOS is noteworthy, as speculations have been present for years. ChromeOS, utilized in Chromebook laptops and other devices like Chromebit and Chromebox, is recognized for its lightweight and speedy performance, along with its dependence on Google’s Chrome browser and cloud storage. While Samat did not go into detail regarding the merger’s particulars, he conveyed an interest in current laptop usage patterns. Recently, Google launched features for Android that improve its compatibility with computers and tablets, such as Desktop Mode, which changes a Pixel device into a mini PC.
