Report: 20% of New Steam Video Games Currently Utilize Generative AI

A recent study from Totally Human Media reveals that nearly 20% of video games launched on Steam in 2025 feature generative AI. Totally Human, which employs machine learning and generative AI for the recommendation of games, books, shows, and movies, discovered that approximately 7,818 games on Steam have acknowledged the use of Generative AI, accounting for around 7% of the full Steam library. For titles released in 2025, close to 20%—or roughly 1 in 5 games—used AI or at least indicated doing so.

This signifies an almost 700% increase in games utilizing generative AI on Steam, according to Totally Human Media’s 2024 report on the matter. Game Rant pointed out that “My Summer Car,” a vehicle simulation game permitting users to build, repair, and manage their car, is the most popular game to proclaim the use of Generative AI, with 2.5 million copies sold. The statement reads, “The developers illustrate how their game employs AI Generated Content like this: There are some AI generated paintings found inside the main house.”

It seems Totally Human gathered this data from Steam, which has mandated game developers to reveal their usage of Generative AI since January 2024. Valve Corporation, the proprietor of Steam, did not promptly respond to Mashable’s request for feedback.

In a Reddit discussion regarding the Totally Human article, numerous commenters remarked that games incorporating AI would be promptly added to their “ignore” list. “We need to tag them so they can be an ignored category,” one user mentioned. “More and more Steam games are going on my Ignore list,” another remarked. Even those who are not completely against AI in games voiced their disapproval. “So many cool games in the Steam Next Fest immediately put me off when I realized they were using GenAI. Pay artists ffs,” another user noted.

Nonetheless, there is complexity among Steam users. “Not surprised in this day and age. Everyone at every company is pushing for AI usage, not surprised the gaming industry as a whole is also pushing for it,” one user stated on Reddit. “So far AI assets are pretty easy to spot as you no doubt already know but I get the sentiment of ‘what am I paying for if it’s all AI’ and agree with it. I suppose I don’t mind AI usage for basic things like UI elements or unit cards, simple stuff.”
