Google AI Summaries Now Highlighted in Discover Feed

Google’s AI-produced summaries have begun appearing in the Discover feed. Google verified to TechCrunch that AI Overviews are rolling out to the news feed on the Google app for iOS and Android. We observed some AI Overviews in the Discover feed during our iOS app testing. Typically, the tailored news feed showcases headlines from various sources, curated based on your search history.

Our observations reveal that AI Overviews deliver a summary of a news item reported by multiple sources, recognized by publisher logos in the top left corner. Tapping the module brings up a list of various stories.

Google indicated that AI Overviews in the Discover feed would concentrate on sports and entertainment; however, we encountered an AI-generated summary related to a political story.

The launch of Overviews in the Discover feed enhances the increasing list of areas within Google Search featuring AI-generated summaries. It started with summaries displayed at the top of the search page, yielding mixed feedback, and now encompasses summaries in the People Also Ask section. During Google I/O 2025, the company claimed its AI Overviews reach over 1.5 billion individuals each month. Recently, Google introduced AI Mode, an alternative to conventional search, offering answers via an AI chatbot utilizing the Gemini model.

Although Google plays down claims that its generative AI features are adversely affecting publisher traffic, numerous publishers report continued declines. The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and others have observed a notable drop in organic search traffic, as have other prominent news organizations and independent bloggers. A SimilarWeb analysis from 2025 indicated a 26 percent reduction in organic search traffic since the debut of AI Overviews.

A Google representative informed TechCrunch that AI Overviews in the Discover feed is being launched in the U.S. and will emphasize lifestyle subjects such as sports and entertainment. Nevertheless, the AI-generated summaries we discovered addressed serious news topics, including the BBC’s documentary on the war in Gaza and Mike Waltz’s Senate confirmation for his UN ambassadorship.

Google did not promptly provide comments regarding the specific topics that will be summarized by generative AI.
