Uber Partners with Lucid to Roll Out More than 20,000 Robotaxis, Set to Launch in the U.S. by 2026

Uber has announced a multi-million dollar partnership with U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid and robotics company Nuro. The three organizations are set to introduce at least 20,000 robotaxis “in numerous markets globally” over the next six years, starting in a significant U.S. city in 2026.

The ride-hailing app disclosed the news on Thursday, indicating that Lucid vehicles will be owned and overseen by Uber or its third-party fleet associates. These vehicles, equipped with technology from Nuro, will be made available to riders “exclusively” via the Uber platform, as stated in the company’s press release.

Under the terms of the deal, Uber is committing $300 million to Lucid and a non-disclosed — yet “substantial” — amount to Nuro, as reported by the Financial Times.

Uber remarked that the collaboration will “[provide] a fully integrated robotaxi experience engineered for comfort, safety, and scalability.”

“Self-driving vehicles have vast potential to enhance our cities positively,” stated Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. Khosrowshahi noted that the collaboration will “safely deliver the enchantment of autonomous driving to a broader audience worldwide.”

Nuro will lead the safety measures in the development of the vehicle, using simulations, supervised road testing, and closed-course evaluations.

This action reinforces Uber’s goal to carve out a place in the autonomous vehicle industry, which could significantly affect the thousands of gig workers who drive for Uber. Just the day before, the company finalized an agreement with Baidu, a firm operating one of the largest robotaxi fleets in China. They are working together to roll out robotaxis throughout Asia and the Middle East, with potential expansion into Europe.

Tesla has been piloting its own robotaxi service, most recently in Austin, Texas.
