David Dastmalchian, recognized for his performances in “Murderbot” and “Dexter: Resurrection,” is a multifaceted individual: actor, writer, host, and dedicated Muppets fan. His enthusiasm for the Muppets dates back to his early years, which he revealed to Mashable Entertainment Reporter Belen Edwards during Mashable’s Say More interview series.
“I was enchanted by ‘The Muppet Movie’ when I was in kindergarten, and its themes continue to resonate with me,” Dastmalchian mentioned. “I learned ‘The Rainbow Connection’ by heart and dreamed of being Kermit the Frog. Feeling like an outcast as the youngest sibling, that song provided me with comfort.”
He sang “The Rainbow Connection” at his kindergarten talent show, using a toy banjo, but blanked on the lyrics and ran offstage in panic. This incident led him to avoid performances for many years.
Nevertheless, Dastmalchian is now acknowledged for his performances in “Late Night with the Devil” and “The Suicide Squad,” having tackled his fear of the stage. “I always felt frightened, but I discovered how to create something that wasn’t,” he shared.
Initially wishing to embody Kermit, Dastmalchian later found a stronger connection with Gonzo, attracted to his distinctiveness and fondness for the color blue. Earlier in 2025, he realized a dream by acting as Gonzo in a live reading of “The Muppet Movie” at Dynasty Typewriter.
