Tesla is said to be working on an updated version of its Model 3 sedan, which may feature the longest range to date. A recent submission to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), uncovered by Electrek, reveals the Tesla Model 3+. This updated model will be a single-motor, rear-wheel drive version equipped with a larger 225kW motor.
Presently, the RWD variant uses LFP battery cells, but this new iteration will incorporate LG’s ternary lithium-ion cells, known for their enhanced energy density. The car’s fundamental specifications, including overall length, wheelbase length, and weight, will remain identical to the standard Model 3. While not all specifications are yet available, the Model 3+ is predicted to be a longer-range option.
The translated Tesla Model 3 specifications page displays three models on offer, with the new Model 3+ potentially outpacing all of them in terms of range. The current longest-range Tesla Model 3 in China, the RWDe variant, provides 753 kilometers. The new model might surpass 800 kilometers (about 500 miles), setting a new benchmark for Tesla.
In the U.S., the Model 3 offering the greatest range achieves 363 miles according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), whereas China’s range figures rely on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), which generally tends to be more favorable.
This development follows the submission of a new Model Y variant to the MIIT. The Tesla Model YL boasts an extended wheelbase and features three rows of seats, accommodating six occupants. There has been no confirmation regarding when or if these new variants will launch in the U.S. and other regions, but they tackle essential concerns for electric vehicles: interior capacity and range.
