Waymo Expands Robotaxi Reach Following Tesla’s Geofence Growth

The race for the most extensive self-driving taxi service region in Austin is in progress. After Tesla enlarged its Robotaxis geofence in Austin to a more expansive and uniquely configured area, Alphabet’s Waymo also broadened its reach.

Waymo’s self-driving taxis now function over 90 square miles of the city, encompassing neighborhoods like Crestview, Windsor Park, Sunset Valley, and Franklin Park, exceeding Tesla’s service area. In contrast to Tesla’s distinctive shape, Waymo’s updated coverage is delineated by significant roadways such as the MoPac Expressway and Route 183.

Waymo stated in a press announcement that it provides the “sole fully autonomous, 24/7 service for all in Austin,” with more than 100 vehicles operating within the city. On the other hand, Tesla’s service is constrained to a limited number of Model Y vehicles offered only to chosen users with invitations.

Waymo intends to extend its services to additional communities and cities across the nation, currently covering over 700 square miles in the United States. At the same time, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed intentions to broaden the Robotaxi service to the Bay Area, subject to regulatory approval, where Waymo is already present.
