The White House is on the brink of announcing its forthcoming AI executive order, reportedly emphasizing “woke” AI frameworks. As stated by the Wall Street Journal, President Donald Trump’s administration plans to disclose a series of executive orders next week, which will include requirements for government entities to adopt politically neutral AI models, according to unnamed sources.
Concerns regarding bias in AI models, especially related to politics and social matters, have become a divisive topic for conservatives who perceive certain models as excessively left-leaning. This resonates with Trump’s views on media bias and “wokeism,” a term that has been co-opted by the right to disparage liberals in discussions about social justice awareness. The Trump Administration has made it a priority to eliminate DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives, reversing federal DEI programs and deeming these policies as “wasteful” and “discriminatory.”
The initiative for “anti-woke” AI models in the executive order is reportedly spearheaded by AI Czar David Sacks and Sriram Krishnan, a senior White House policy adviser for AI. Sacks has criticized entities like OpenAI for creating ChatGPT with a liberal bias, noting that initial concerns about ChatGPT involved its “woke” programming and absence of truthful responses, as mentioned in a 2023 episode of the All In podcast.
Sacks and Elon Musk share a long-standing friendship and were former colleagues during their time at PayPal. Musk’s xAI company has developed the Grok chatbot, marketed as an “anti-woke” substitute to other chatbots. As AI firms such as OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and xAI vie for Trump’s endorsement and government contracts, xAI may have an advantage due to its political affiliations. Nevertheless, Musk and Trump currently share a contentious relationship, which adds to the complexity.
The interpretation of bias is subjective, with Grok recently adopting an extreme right stance, making anti-Semitic allegations and lauding Hitler. Studies suggest that LLMs, even those deemed too liberal by conservatives, can display implicit gender and racial biases as well as distorted views on press freedoms.
The Journal also indicated that the Trump Administration intends to issue an executive order advocating for the export of U.S.-manufactured AI chips, as part of its strategy to maintain AI superiority over China.
All attention is directed toward the White House for announcements anticipated next week.
