Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor Perform and Fall for Each Other in “The History of Sound” Teaser

What could be better than a single internet boyfriend in a film? Two internet boyfriends in a film! This is the premise of The History of Sound, a romantic drama featuring Paul Mescal (Aftersun, All of Us Strangers) and Josh O’Connor (Challengers).

Helmed by Oliver Hermanus (Living, Moffie) and inspired by the short story penned by Ben Shattuck (who also crafted the screenplay), The History of Sound made its debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, earning positive reviews.

The History of Sound whisks viewers away to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in 1917. There, Kentucky-native singer Lionel Worthing (Mescal) encounters music composition student David White (O’Connor). From their initial meeting, their chemistry—both musical and romantic—is undeniable. The two initiate a romance, but it’s abruptly interrupted when David is conscripted into World War I.

Fast forward to 1920, and the duo reunites, embarking on a journey through Maine. They gather and safeguard folk songs for posterity. Years later, Lionel thrives in Europe, enjoying a successful career and new romantic interests. Nevertheless, memories of his time with David consistently lead him back to that Maine escapade and his deep affection for him.

The inaugural trailer for The History of Sound hints at these various phases of Lionel’s journey, featuring both Mescal and O’Connor performing their share of American folk tunes. Individually, both actors have established themselves as captivating talents, with Mescal receiving an Academy Award nomination for his role in Aftersun, while O’Connor won an Emmy for his performance in The Crown. Witnessing this duo unite for The History of Sound is bound to be a delight.

The History of Sound arrives in theaters on Sept. 12.
