YouTube Utilizes AI to Verify User Age Based on Browsing Behavior

YouTube is deploying AI to evaluate whether users meet age requirements. The platform revealed the launch of technology designed to assess if a user is above or below 18. As stated in a blog entry, YouTube’s AI will scrutinize various indicators, including the genres of videos a user searches, the categories they engage with, and the lifespan of their account. “YouTube was one of the pioneers in providing experiences customized for young audiences, and we take pride in being at the forefront of introducing technology that prioritizes safety while protecting teen privacy,” the company proclaimed.

Should a user be classified as under 18, YouTube will automatically apply age-relevant protections, such as activating digital wellbeing utilities, turning off personalized ads, and incorporating safeguards into recommendations. If the system inaccurately categorizes a user as under 18, they can confirm their age using a credit card or government-issued ID. YouTube will start testing the AI technology with a limited group of U.S.-based users in the upcoming weeks.

The platform enjoys popularity among adolescents. A 2023 Pew Research Center survey revealed that one in five teenagers engages with YouTube and TikTok “almost constantly.” YouTube dominates within this demographic, with 93 percent of teens indicating regular usage, outpacing TikTok.
