The cost of the original Nintendo Switch is poised to rise in the United States.
On Friday, Nintendo revealed an increase in prices for its older gaming consoles and accessories, attributed to “market conditions.” The pricing for the new Nintendo Switch 2 will stay the same. Nevertheless, the original Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, Nintendo Switch Lite, and certain accessories will experience price hikes.
The announcement did not disclose the updated retail price for Switch 1 systems, but hints about what to anticipate are available.
Nintendo enthusiasts, or those seeking Switch 2 restocks, may recognize the X account Wario64, famous for monitoring Switch inventory online. The account mentioned that elevated prices are already being implemented at retailers like Target, with increases of $30 to $50.

As Kotaku highlights, video game consoles generally decrease in price over their lifespan. However, Nintendo is opting for a different strategy, possibly due to tariffs.
While Nintendo’s statement did not reference tariffs, the company pointed to “market conditions,” which frequently serves as a euphemism for tariffs. This terminology was also used in April when the company halted Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S. following initial tariffs. Earlier this year, Microsoft similarly announced price hikes on Xbox consoles, citing “market conditions.” Experts have previously informed Mashable that tariffs have a considerable effect on video game consoles and accessories.
“[A] lot of the major electronic brands may have sidestepped some tariffs by amassing inventories earlier in the year, prior to the announcement of tariffs,” remarked Rick Kowalski, Senior Director of Business Intelligence at the Consumer Technology Association, in a previous interview with Mashable regarding tariffs and technology pricing. “Those stockpiles will only endure for a few months at most, so ultimately, importers will need to replenish their stocks, and they will bring in more products at the elevated tariff rates.”
Nintendo asserts that prices for the Nintendo Switch 2 system, along with physical and digital Switch games, will remain unchanged for now. Nonetheless, the company suggests that additional “price adjustments may be necessary in the future.”
