Netflix’s “Wednesday” continues to resonate with Edgar Allan Poe, much like the unyielding heartbeat in his story. Tim Burton’s series, during its inaugural season, was abundant with allusions to Poe, from the Gothic Nevermore Academy (named after Poe’s “The Raven”) to the treacherous Poe Cup and the enigmatic Nightshade Society, potentially alluding to “Morella.” In Season 2, although references are less frequent, they remain—Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) even characterizes a plot twist as “worthy of Poe.” We’ve gathered them below. If you’re eager while waiting for the releases of “Wednesday” Season 2 Parts 1 and 2, consider revisiting “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
**The Poe portrait**
In Season 2, episode 1, Bianca Barclay (Joy Sunday) is called in by new principal Barry Dort (Steve Buscemi), who gestures towards a Poe portrait, dubbing him “our most notable alumnus.” Dort’s hairstyle even bears a resemblance to Poe’s.
**The ravens**
While “The Raven” was often referenced in Season 1, real ravens make an appearance in Season 2. In episode 1, the Founder’s Pyre for the students is designed in the shape of a raven. Ravens in the central storyline parallel Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” more than Poe’s gentle tapping.
**The clockwork heart**
The ticking heart in a ghost story recounted by Ajax (Georgie Farmer) in episode 1 appears to be inspired by Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.” “The Tale of the Skull Tree,” a Tim Burton-esque animation, showcases a boy with a mechanical heart who becomes icy and driven, meeting his demise at Nevermore Academy. Ajax explains that by listening to the Skull Tree’s hollow eye, you can hear his heart, reminiscent of Poe’s character tormented by a heart he interred.
**The Tell-Tale Café**
In the Nevermore quad, a food truck named The Tell-Tale Café refers to “The Tell-Tale Heart,” serving items such as “Murders in the Rue Macchiato.”
**A stack of Poe books**
In episode 2, Wednesday puzzles through the clocktower involving absent books by literary greats, including Poe.
