The encouraging news is that the MacBook Pro is likely on the verge of a substantial redesign incorporating an OLED display. On the flip side, Apple’s OLED laptops are not anticipated to launch imminently.
As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the OLED upgrade for the MacBook Pro is projected to be at least a year away.
“It’s anticipated to be between late 2026 and early 2027 and should include the M6 chip,” Gurman stated in the Aug. 10 issue of his Power On newsletter.
Thus, even if a MacBook featuring an M5 chip is introduced in 2025 or 2026, it may be prudent to hold out for the OLED variant.
The postponement of a potential M6 MacBook Pro with an OLED screen isn’t particularly shocking, considering the forthcoming M5 MacBook Pro is also rumored to experience delays until 2026. The finest MacBooks currently in circulation are equipped with M4 chips. In July, Gurman noted that “the M5 MacBook Pro line will be the last with the existing design.”
This new timeline will certainly challenge the patience of those keen to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro that offers more than just enhanced silicon. The OLED MacBook Pro will signify the first major update for the machine since 2021, when Apple eliminated the Touch Bar, reintroduced MagSafe charging, and enlarged the smaller model from 13 inches to 14.
One ray of hope is that Apple has historically not hesitated to launch two generations of M-series chips within the same year. The year began with the introduction of the M2 Pro and Max MacBook Pros in January, followed by M3 models in October.
If OLED is your primary concern, the M4 iPad Pro with an OLED display is always an option. Otherwise, exercising patience with Apple is recommended.
