Prepare yourselves for a groundbreaking era of superhero films. With Superman, we don’t merely get a refreshed take on the iconic hero’s journey; we experience the debut of a whole new version of the DC Comics universe. Wave goodbye to the DCEU and welcome the DCU.
David Corenswet takes on the role of the main superhero in Superman, one of the most eagerly awaited films of the summer. The cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as the reporter and love interest Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as the malevolent villain Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer. Additionally, there’s Krypto the Superdog, who may just capture your affection.
You can still see the Man of Steel in theaters, but if you’d prefer to watch from your sofa, here’s everything you need to know about viewing Superman at home.
What is Superman about?
James Gunn’s Superman follows Clark Kent/Superman (Corenswet) as he grapples with balancing his ordinary life as reporter Clark Kent with his quest for truth, justice, and the American way as Superman. It’s not a retelling of the origin story but rather centers on Superman in his third year of safeguarding Metropolis. He has an established relationship with Lois Lane (Brosnahan), who disagrees with his maneuvers in preventing a war. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor (Hoult) is scheming to bring him down.

Is the new Superman worth watching?
A considerable amount was on the line with Gunn’s Superman, and largely, it meets expectations. Mashable’s reviewer referred to it as “big summer fun” and “a preview of something larger on the horizon.” It’s not flawless, but it’s undoubtedly a refreshing change in the superhero landscape. It has amassed a remarkable $583 million at the global box office. This achievement makes it not just the highest-grossing superhero film this year but the third-highest-grossing film of any genre domestically in 2025.
Superman is also garnering overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning an impressive 83 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 91 percent audience score.
Mashable’s reviewer sums it up succinctly: “In Superman, Gunn has crafted what might be the quintessential Silver Age comic book saga ever translated to screen.”
