Video Game Employs AI-Created Influencers in TikTok Advertisements

The free-to-play title *The First Descendant* has come under fire for purportedly utilizing fake AI-generated influencers in its TikTok advertisements, along with a deepfake of an actual streamer without their permission. The developer attributed this issue to “certain irregularities” in its solicitation for user-generated content.

Launched by Nexon, *The First Descendant* is a third-person loot shooter where combat ensues against alien invaders. Similar to titles like *Fortnite* and *League of Legends*, it features “seasons” that introduce new content. Season 3: Breakthrough commenced in August, with Nexon sharing promotional clips on TikTok.

Players observed problems with these advertisements, suspecting AI involvement due to synthetic voices, unauthentic scripts, and peculiar movements. Reddit user u/iHardlyTriHard gathered multiple ads, pointing out that their TikTok feed displayed four videos in just 15 minutes. They condemned the reliance on AI instead of real content creators.

One advertisement reportedly featured a deepfake of streamer DanieltheDemon without his consent. He asserted that he had no connection to the game and that his likeness was utilized without authorization, with AI modifying his video to advertise *The First Descendant*.

Reddit users showed concern that these advertisements could damage the game’s image. Nexon responded by stating that the ads were submitted by third parties via a TikTok Creative Challenge program. They are looking into the improper circumstances surrounding some of the videos.

TikTok’s Creative Challenge permits brands to request user-generated ads, with approved users receiving commissions. Nonetheless, TikTok’s vetting procedure may require enhancements. Nexon either fully relied on TikTok for ad validation or overlooked AI content in their reviews. Nexon is currently assessing the matter and will provide updates in due time, likely adopting greater caution with forthcoming crowdsourced advertisements.
