Apple’s FineWoven might soon be phased out, but it is expected to be succeeded by FineWoven 2.0. This speculation comes from leaker Majin Bu, who asserts that Apple intends to unveil cases for its forthcoming iPhone 17 series made from a novel, non-leather material.
Bu states that the new substance will be a synthetic fabric with a “more technical, less luxury vibe.” It is said to feature a visible textile texture, improved durability against scratches and the wear typical of FineWoven. Additionally, Bu claims it will possess a more rubbery and grippy feel than FineWoven, reducing the likelihood of dropping it, will be environmentally friendly, and will be available in four matte hues: green, orange, blue, and purple.
Rumors about Apple developing a new synthetic case material first surfaced in April 2024. While FineWoven feels pleasant to the touch, it has shown a tendency to wear down after just a few months of usage. Apple chose to retain some FineWoven accessories for another year, but it might finally be time for a transition.
Bu also mentioned that Apple “may” roll out Liquid Glass cases, which are anticipated to provide a “more striking aesthetic,” although details regarding these are limited. Lastly, Bu indicated that the silicone cases will feature a lanyard loop, akin to the one found on the AirPods Pro 2 case.
All of this is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro in September, though nothing has been confirmed at this stage.
