Netflix and Sony Talk About Follow-Up for Animated Musical Success ‘KPop Demon Hunters’

Fans of “KPop Demon Hunters,” rejoice. The surprising musical triumph with its infectious soundtrack may lead to a sequel. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures and Netflix are discussing a follow-up to the animated film featuring the K-pop group HUNTR/X facing off against demons, including the mesmerizing boy band, the Saja Boys.

The “KPop Demon Hunters” soundtrack, boasting tracks like “Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop,” has achieved tremendous success, overtaking “Wicked” as the leading soundtrack of 2025. “Golden” has amassed more than 430 million streams on Spotify. This week, “KPop Demon Hunters” became the most-viewed Netflix original film ever, reaching 236 million views since its release on June 20.

Fueled by fan excitement, the streaming platform launched “KPop Demon Hunters: A Sing-Along Event” in 1,000 theaters across North America, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. The two-day event sold out rapidly, emerging as the unofficial box office champion that weekend.

Studios are increasingly turning to films based on established intellectual property (IP), creating sequels, prequels, and spinoffs of popular franchises as secure investments via ticket sales and merchandise. The unexpected success of “KPop Demon Hunters” caught many off guard, as it features an original narrative without major stars or an existing IP with a loyal fanbase.

Nonetheless, true K-pop enthusiasts like Mashable culture editor Crystal Bell anticipated the potential for a sensation when done right. Bell spoke with the “Demon Hunters” team to delve into how they produced hit K-pop songs while ensuring a unified story. It’s a worthwhile read to understand their approach.

Meanwhile, Netflix and Sony need to finalize an agreement for a sequel. In 2021, amid the pandemic when box office earnings were low, Sony struck a deal with Netflix to distribute “Demon Hunters” and other films on the streaming service. Sony gets a share of the soundtrack revenues, while Netflix controls the merchandise, as detailed by THR. Hopefully, they can come to an arrangement.

“KPop Demon Hunters” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
