Acclaimed British actors Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Sir Ben Kingsley were delighted to join forces on the eagerly awaited adaptation of Richard Osman’s popular novel, *The Thursday Murder Club*.
During an interview with Mashable’s entertainment editor Kristy Puchko, Mirren, Brosnan, Kingsley, and director Chris Columbus shared their enthusiasm about collaborating, the hurdles of translating the cherished book to screen, and a particular annoyance featured in the movie.
*The Thursday Murder Club* revolves around four retirees who occupy their time unraveling murder mysteries. When several acquaintances turn up dead, they plunge into the inquiry, determined not to be underestimated because of their age.
In a memorable moment, Joyce Meadowcroft (Celia Imrie) and Elizabeth Best (Mirren) go incognito. Joyce exclaims, “This is ever so thrilling. I feel as if we’re in one of those Sunday night shows about two spirited, clever elderly detectives, outsmarting the authorities at every step. Do you feel that way?” Elizabeth counters, “No. And Joyce, refrain from using the term ‘spirited clever elderly ladies’ in my presence again.”
When questioned if Mirren identified with Elizabeth’s aversion to the phrase, she firmly remarked, “I *detest* the term ‘feisty,'” adding, “Just *abhor* that word, akin to ‘Get lost,’ basically.” She described it as an “horrible, horrible term.”
In *The Thursday Murder Club*, Mirren and her fellow cast members reveal that their characters possess much greater complexity than ageists might presume. In the discussion, they elaborate on the pleasure of delving into these characters’ intricacies and collaborating as a unit.
