On Wednesday, Garmin unveiled its latest high-end smartwatch, the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro, showcasing groundbreaking features such as an innovative microLED display. Announced just ahead of Apple’s launch event, Garmin’s new device is aimed at dedicated outdoor athletes and carries a premium price tag.
The Fenix 8 Pro comes in two models. The first features an AMOLED display available in 47mm and 51mm sizes, priced at $1,199.99 and $1,299.99, respectively. The microLED display model, which is only offered in 51mm, retails for $1,999.99.
Garmin has a reputation for creating some of the most robust smartwatches, including top-tier fitness trackers, and the Fenix 8 Pro appears ready to challenge the forthcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3. (The new Apple Ultra gadget is also speculated to include a microLED display.)
The microLED display on the Garmin is remarkable, comprising over 400,000 LEDs and achieving a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, making it the brightest smartwatch display on the market. In comparison, the Apple Watch Series 10 offers a 2,000 nit display, while the Galaxy Watch 8 features a 3,000 nit display. Like its other devices, Garmin has equipped it with an LED flashlight, advantageous for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
A standout feature of the Fenix 8 Pro is its connectivity options. As per Garmin, the smartwatches will provide both satellite and cellular connectivity. When paired with Garmin’s inReach technology, this enables users to request emergency services, communicate through Garmin’s Messenger app, and share their locations with other Garmin inReach users. Voice calls can also be made, though the recipient must have a Garmin inReach-compatible device.
This functionality allows smartwatch users to consider leaving their smartphones behind while hiking. Although the cellular connectivity may not match the latest innovations from Samsung and Apple, the satellite connection proves valuable in remote regions where cellular towers are limited.
For emergencies, the watch transmits a signal to Garmin’s Response Center, which aids in rescue operations. The inReach service requires a subscription starting at $7.99 per month. The new Fenix 8 Pro models are available on Garmin’s website and are set to launch on Sept. 8, a day before Apple’s event.
