Speculations About the New Camera Enhancements and Features of iPhone 17

The significant Apple event is mere days away, during which the company will present its newest mobile device, the iPhone 17.

While official details regarding the iPhone 17 are limited, speculation hints at notable new camera functionalities and enhancements on the horizon.

Here’s what Mashable has uncovered.

The camera protrusion will transform into a camera island

A recurring rumor surrounding the iPhone 17’s camera, supported by various purported leaked visuals, pertains to the configuration of Apple’s trio of camera lenses on the back of the device.

Historically, Apple has employed a “camera bump,” a square extension on the iPhone’s rear, to accommodate the camera lenses.

It seems that the iPhone 17 will expand this bump across the whole back, forming what enthusiasts are referring to as a “camera island.”

Enhanced camera lenses

This shouldn’t come as a shock.

Apple has regularly upgraded at least one camera lens with each new iPhone iteration. The main camera of the iPhone 14 Pro received a 48MP sensor, and the ultra-wide lens on the iPhone 16 Pro was enhanced to 48MP last year.

This year, the telephoto lens is anticipated to receive the 48MP upgrade on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Along with the 48MP enhancement, the telephoto lens will provide an improved zoom capability, increasing from a 5x optical zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro to an 8x optical zoom on the iPhone 17 Pro.

The front-facing TrueDepth camera, which has remained at 12MP for several years, is expected to upgrade to 24MP, a modification expected throughout the entire iPhone 17 series.

Multi-camera video capture

Third-party applications have long permitted unofficial multi-cam video recording on the iPhone.

Some apps facilitate multiple devices, others allow recording through several lenses on the same iPhone, and some offer picture-in-picture multi-cam recording.

It remains uncertain what Apple’s official multi-cam video recording feature will involve, but it seems a new functionality within the Camera app will introduce multi-cam recording to the iPhone 17.

A new Pro Camera application

Reports indicate that Apple will unveil a new Pro Camera application.

Although the title suggests exclusivity to Pro versions, it’s unclear if this app will be restricted to those models or integrated within an updated Final Cut Camera app.

If launched, the Pro Camera app is anticipated to deliver professional-grade control over photos and videos, akin to third-party applications like Halide, Kino, and Filmic Pro.
