Stephen Colbert Addresses Charlie Kirk Situation with a Plea to Oppose Political Violence

Stephen Colbert has reacted to the passing of Charlie Kirk, a right-wing figure with millions of followers on social media who was shot and killed during an event at a Utah college campus. Kirk was a supporter of President Trump and the founder of Turning Point USA, an initiative that sought to promote right-wing ideas on school campuses.

“After we completed our scripts for tonight’s show this afternoon, we at The Late Show found out that Charlie Kirk, a notable right-wing figure, was killed at a speaking event in Utah,” Colbert says in the clip above, which aired before the main show.

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and all those who cared for him. I am old enough to vividly remember the political violence of the 1960s, and I hope it is clear to everyone in America that political violence does not resolve any of our political disputes. Political violence merely breeds further political violence. And I pray wholeheartedly that this is the isolated act of a madman, and not a precursor of what lies ahead.”
