Google has recently dismissed approximately 200 contractors who were engaged in the moderation and enhancement of AI products. As reported by Wired, these layoffs took place without prior notice in at least two separate instances last month. The publication interviewed several employees who asserted that the layoffs were linked to disputes regarding compensation and job stability. These contractors, as highlighted by Wired, are experts holding a master’s degree or PhD, utilizing their knowledge to support AI products such as chatbots and Google’s AI Overviews.

The employees conveyed that working conditions were unsatisfactory, with two former staff members lodging grievances with the National Labor Relations Board, claiming wrongful termination. Courtenay Mencini, a spokesperson for Google, informed Wired that these individuals are employed by GlobalLogic or their subcontractors, and not by Alphabet. GlobalLogic along with their subcontractors are accountable for employment and working conditions. Google conducts audits of its suppliers in line with its Supplier Code of Conduct.

This has been a difficult time for Google’s AI products. Recently, Penske Media Corporation, the publisher of Rolling Stone, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and Billboard, filed a lawsuit against Google, alleging that it utilized the company’s content in AI Overviews without authorization.
