Apple Improves Parental Controls in iOS 26

Apple has launched its enhanced parental controls with the debut of iOS 26, providing new tools for parents to oversee their child’s communications. The newest software update introduces Communication Limits, which necessitate parental approval for young users to reach out to new contacts via Phone, FaceTime, Messages, or iCloud. This enhances Apple’s Child Account capability within Family Sharing, which imposes age-related controls and supervision. Parents can modify an account’s age or switch it to a Child Account in iOS 26, with default configurations for ages 13-17 including web content filters, app limitations, and Communication Safety to identify and alert about sensitive materials. The App Store’s age classifications and download choices have also been revised to improve safety. Recently, advocates for child safety protested during Apple’s product event, calling on the company to shield young users and tackle child sexual abuse content. Apple is under scrutiny for allegedly failing to adhere to reporting standards and for the effects of technology on youth mental health. The new features are accessible on devices operating iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, visionOS 26, and tvOS 26.
