In a manner akin to fellow late-night personalities such as Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon has reacted to the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! by ABC, which occurred under pressure from Trump associate and FCC chair Brendan Carr.
Fallon opted for a more lighthearted tone in his monologue, playfully discussing the mix-up with Jimmy Kimmel before voicing his support.
“This morning I woke up to 100 text messages from my dad saying, ‘I’m sorry they cancelled your show,'” the host of The Tonight Show remarked. “Honestly, I have no clue what’s happening, and neither does anyone else. But I can say I know Jimmy Kimmel, and he is a kind, humorous, and caring person, and I hope to see him back.”
He briefly mentioned the topic of government censorship, stating, “Many people are concerned that we might not continue expressing ourselves freely, or that we’ll face censorship. However, I will report on the president’s visit to the UK just as I always do.”
Following this, he made a joke reminiscent of Meyers and Stewart, praising Trump’s UK visit with exaggeratedly positive commentary.
“President Trump is making America great again by enhancing our national standing, revitalizing our economy, and strengthening our military. I officially nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. And feel free to quote me on that! See? We can still express ourselves freely.”
