Julia Fox Investigates the Connection Between Achievement and Sacrifice in Him

Julia Fox conversed with Mashable’s Ty Cole at the press event for the film produced by Jordan Peele, *Him*. Directed and co-written by Justin Tipping, *Him* centers on Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers), an aspiring professional football draft pick who aims to be the GOAT. This ambition was instilled in Cameron by his father from an early age, stressing sacrifice with the phrase, “That’s what real men do. They sacrifice. No guts, no glory.” Former football star Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans) helps Cameron through an intense training regimen that pushes him to his limits.

During the interview, Julia Fox, who plays Isaiah’s wife and influencer Elsie White, discussed her perspective on the connection between sacrifice and success in high-level sports.

“It somewhat requires you to detach a bit from your wants and desires,” Fox stated. “I know many players will avoid the foods they love. They just eliminate everything to remain [disciplined]… Their sacrifices truly know no limits. It’s every single aspect, you know? It’s a bit dehumanizing. Even the fact that they can be traded overnight… You will grow attached to your players, the city, you’ve relocated your family there, and suddenly your child has to switch school[s]. I feel a lot of these players derive so much identity from the teams they belong to. And then, in an instant, that can disappear. Or in a moment, they could suffer an injury, making them perceived as used goods.”

Fox also shared how motherhood has shaped her own career sacrifices:

“I’m a mother. I have a young child. I can’t engage in all the activities I wish I could. So for me, I would say my greatest sacrifice concerns the time I’m willing to forgo.”

*Him* debuts in theaters on Sept. 19.
