Director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland introduced the chilling, innovative, and genre-defining 28 Days Later back in 2002, followed by 28 Weeks Later in 2007. Now, more than twenty years later, the pair returns with 28 Years Later. And it’s a real treat.

True to its title, 28 Years Later unfolds 28 years after the incidents of the first two films. It features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and newcomer Alfie Williams, presenting a fresh wave of catastrophic dystopia on a zombie-infested planet. Additionally, it cleverly utilized iPhones to shoot most of the terrifying scenes. Mashable’s Shannon Connellan described it as “one of the most relentless and frightening films of the year” in her critique. It’s now ready to stream on your screen.

Here’s everything you should know about how to watch 28 Years Later at home — including streaming details and how to access it for less.

What is 28 Years Later about?

28 Years Later centers on a family residing in a tiny community on an island off the coast of England. It’s a secured enclave of humanity isolated from the Rage Virus-infected mainland, only reachable via a heavily fortified causeway during low tide. As a rite of passage, father Jamie (Taylor-Johnson) takes his 12-year-old son Spike (Williams) to the mainland to witness remnants of society and make his first kill. Spike discovers there’s a doctor on the mainland and sets off with his chronically ill mother, Isla (Comer), in search of a cure.

Naturally, traversing post-apocalyptic Britain is no simple task. They also uncover that the Rage Virus has evolved.

Is 28 Years Later worth watching?

Grossing $145.8 million worldwide, 28 Years Later became the third horror film of 2025 to exceed the $100 million threshold (following Sinners and Final Destination: Bloodlines). Remarkably, many reviews from theaters are favorable. It currently stands at an 88 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 64 percent audience rating. Mashable’s own reviewer praised it, calling it “a triumphant return” and “one of the scariest movies of the year.”

“Boyle and Garland, alongside their extraordinarily talented team and an exceptional cast — led by the young and marvelous Williams — skillfully connect their original creation with contemporary themes and create a terrifying new environment, one that will stress you out and have you biting your own nails,” Connellan remarks.

Zombie apocalypse films are absolutely making a comeback.
