GoPro Unveils New Action Cameras Boasting 360-Degree Video and Integrated Light

GoPro introduced two new action cameras on Wednesday: the MAX2 360-degree camera and the compact LIT HERO. These were revealed alongside GoPro’s latest AI-tracking gimbal, Fluid Pro AI, targeting a diverse array of videographers, providing options for both “professional-quality 360 content” and more casual shooting.

GoPro MAX2 360-degree action camera

GoPro has implemented some design modifications from the 2019 MAX to the new $499.99 MAX2, positioning its lenses directly across from each other rather than offset. The MAX2, part of GoPro’s 360-degree camera lineup, can capture 360 video in 8K resolution, a significant upgrade from the MAX’s 5.6k. High resolution is essential for clear 360-degree footage because of the broader field of view.

An important enhancement in the MAX2 is the introduction of interchangeable lenses, akin to Insta360’s X5. Previously, a scratched lens on the MAX meant the whole camera had to be replaced. The MAX2’s dust- and water-resistant replaceable lenses minimize the issues and costs associated with damage. GoPro specifies that the MAX2’s lenses can be easily twisted off for replacement.

The detachable lenses have not compromised the MAX2’s robustness. Similar to the MAX, it is waterproof up to 16ft (5m) and comes equipped with a six-microphone system for capturing ambient sound. The MAX2 is also powered by an upgraded 1960mAh battery, although GoPro hasn’t disclosed its operating time on a single charge.

The GoPro MAX2 will launch on Sept. 30, with pre-orders currently open.

GoPro LIT HERO action camera

The $269.99 GoPro LIT HERO gets its name from the integrated LED light, which brightens subjects in low-light conditions. This light is located on the front next to the lens, as the HERO series does not include a front LCD screen like the HERO Black models. The LIT HERO features three brightness levels and includes a diffuser for softer illumination.

Weighing 93g, the LIT HERO is slightly bigger and heavier than the HERO. It features an enhanced frame rate, recording at 4K at 60fps compared to 30fps in its predecessor. However, it falls short of the HERO 13 Black’s 5.3K resolution at 60fps and is only waterproof up to 16ft (5m) compared to the HERO 13 Black’s 33ft (10m). Nevertheless, the LIT HERO’s capabilities should meet the needs of most users, unless they intend to edit scuba diving footage.

Engineered for “whatever, whenever” filming in any lighting, GoPro asserts that the LIT HERO’s LED light contributes a “retro vibes” feel. The LIT HERO’s 1255 mAh battery is said to provide over 100 minutes of recording on the highest video quality with the light switched off, or over 75 minutes with the light set to high.

While this is shorter than the HERO13 Black’s 2.5 hours, the HERO Black series provides additional features. Still, the GoPro LIT HERO represents a budget-friendly action camera choice for many users.

The GoPro LIT HERO will be released on Oct. 21, with pre-orders currently available.
