Stephen Colbert explored President Donald Trump’s “campaign of vengeance against his adversaries” on Thursday night’s Late Show, emphasizing “the one opponent who refuses to engage,” the United Nations escalator.
On Tuesday, prior to his address at the U.N. General Assembly, the president’s ascent was unexpectedly hindered by a stalled escalator, followed by technical difficulties such as a nonfunctional teleprompter. A few days later, Trump accused the U.N. of “triple sabotage,” sharing an extensive message on his social media platform Truth Social, asserting “three very nefarious incidents! This wasn’t mere coincidence…”
The White House launched an inquiry with the Secret Service and insisted the U.N. follow suit, with U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stating that the escalator “had halted after a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was activated at the top of the escalator,” likely triggered by Trump’s own videographer. Concerning the teleprompter, Dujarric remarked, “We have no comment as the teleprompter for the U.S. president is managed by the White House.”
Regarding the purported “third sabotage,” Trump claimed that attendees “couldn’t hear anything” while using the U.N. Interpretation System earpieces. A U.N. official replied: “The sound system was engineered to allow individuals at their seats to hear speeches being translated into six different languages through earpieces.”
It’s a complicated situation to scrutinize. It would take someone with multiple roles to investigate. At least three roles.
Thus, on The Late Show, Colbert sported three Sherlock Holmes hats and three Sherlock Holmes pipes as the personas of “Escalator Investigator,” “Teleprompter Investigompter,” and “Ineffective Acoustics Detective Sleuth-Fix” to unveil the truth.
