Mae Martin, the creator of Wayward, underscored the importance of showcasing queer characters whose identities are not the main focus. The series depicts Alex, a trans man played by Martin, and his spouse Laura, portrayed by Sarah Gadon, as they relocate to Tall Pines, Vermont. The local educational institution, Tall Pines Academy, is managed by Evelyn Wade, played by Collette. The series delves into themes of acceptance and belonging while avoiding an emphasis on queer trauma. Martin stressed the necessity of depicting LGBTQ+ characters without falling back on tragic storylines. Collette remarked that the show’s queer elements are not exaggerated, and Alyvia Alyn Lind, who plays a bi character, valued the chance to embody a character whose challenges are not dictated by her sexuality.
