Apple Creates ChatGPT-Alike Application to Investigate Fresh Siri AI Overhaul

Apple is set to undertake a major AI revamp for Siri soon. The iPhone manufacturer has been refreshing its Siri voice assistant to keep pace with AI solutions from firms such as OpenAI and Google. Furthermore, Apple has crafted its own iteration of OpenAI’s AI chatbot to evaluate the new Siri.

As per a recent report from Bloomberg’s Apple insider Mark Gurman, Apple has designed a ChatGPT-like application named “Veritas” to get Siri ready for its upgrade next year. Veritas is intended for internal utilization among Apple staff in its AI department, with no current intention for a public launch.

The existence of Veritas sheds light on Apple’s approach. Apple stands as one of the leading tech firms that has yet to fully embed AI into its offerings, unlike its rivals. Apple introduced its AI capabilities, termed Apple Intelligence, the previous year, leveraging a combination of Apple’s technology and AI from collaborators.

Veritas is utilized to evaluate Apple’s new framework, Linwood, which powers the redesigned Siri. Linwood incorporates large language models, inclusive of Apple’s own, along with a third-party model. Additionally, Apple is employing Veritas to test functionalities for the new Siri voice assistant, which remains in the developmental stage. The company will also check whether these functionalities operate in an AI chatbot format.

Features being evaluated include AI searches through personal information, such as music collections and emails. Testing is also in progress for in-app functionalities like AI photo editing.

Recently, Apple unveiled the iPhone 17. Amongst Apple’s forthcoming products, the updated Siri appears to be the next significant mobile launch. Recent updates suggest Apple is still in the process of determining which AI firms to collaborate with for the enhanced voice assistant.

Yet, the Siri enhancement has encountered various postponements. Gurman indicates that Apple is targeting a March 2026 release for the new Siri.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, the parent company of Mashable, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in April, claiming copyright infringement in the training and operation of its AI systems.
