Do you recall the Apple Vision Pro? Apple’s AR/VR headset launched over a year and a half ago in early 2024 with considerable anticipation. However, enthusiasm for the Apple Vision Pro appears to have waned as the sales of the $3,499 device have declined.
Nevertheless, Apple is not ready to abandon the Apple Vision Pro just yet.
The company is in the process of creating a new iteration of the AR/VR headset, provisionally called the Apple Vision Pro 2.
Conflicting information from two credible sources exists regarding Apple’s enhanced AR/VR headset. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicates that the new Vision Pro 2 will be powered by Apple’s forthcoming M5 chipset. Conversely, Bloomberg’s Apple insider Mark Gurman has previously mentioned that the enhanced Vision Pro 2 would utilize Apple’s most recent chipset, the M4. Regardless, it seems to be a notable upgrade from the M2 chip that currently powers the Vision Pro model along with the R1 chip.
Alongside the improved processor, Gurman notes that Apple is working on boosting the 16 cores within the neural engine of the existing Vision Pro, which would improve the Vision Pro 2’s capabilities in performing AI-related functions.
Furthermore, one significant enhancement for the Vision Pro 2 is a more functional one: The headstrap. Even owners of the Vision Pro who enjoy the headset have remarked on its weight, particularly during prolonged use.
As reported by Bloomberg’s Gurman during the summer, Apple is creating a new headstrap designed to enable users to wear the 1.4-pound device more comfortably for extended durations. The report suggests the new strap for the Vision Pro 2 will emphasize minimizing neck strain and head discomfort.
Apple appears to be aiming for a Vision Pro 2 launch by Spring 2026 before transitioning to a more cost-effective, lighter AR/VR headset expected to debut sometime in 2027 or thereafter.
