If Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is unable to invoke affection, it will instill dread, as the much-anticipated adaptation’s first trailer has premiered today. As the renowned author and Gothic figure Mary Shelley articulated, “Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change,” and this trailer aims to capture precisely that.
Drawing from Shelley’s enduring narrative of humanity and monstrosity Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, the film features Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi portraying Victor Frankenstein and his meticulously crafted Creature. We’ve already caught a glimpse of the Saltburn actor in full Creature guise, and now, the trailer breathes life into it all.
We are also introduced to the remaining impressive cast of Frankenstein, which includes Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, and Christian Convery.
Mashable’s entertainment editor Kristy Puchko lauded del Toro’s Frankenstein in her review, describing it as “a timeless horror tale with a romantic twist that renders it gruesome, beautiful, and profoundly moving simultaneously.”
Frankenstein debuts in select theaters on Oct. 17 and arrives on Netflix on Nov. 7.
