When is Taylor Swift’s music video for “The Fate of Ophelia” going to be available on YouTube?

Taylor Swift has a penchant for engaging mysteries.

From the myriad of Easter eggs she plants for her audience to the drop of albums such as The Life of a Showgirl without prior singles, Swift frequently shrouds her subsequent actions in obscurity. This air of secrecy now surrounds her forthcoming music video for The Life of a Showgirl‘s lead single, “The Fate of Ophelia,” inspired by Shakespeare.

For her previous two non-rerecorded albums, Swift unveiled videos for her leading singles—Midnights’ “Anti-Hero” and The Tortured Poets Department’s “Fortnight”—on YouTube simultaneously with the album launch. In contrast, for “The Fate of Ophelia,” fans must first head to theaters to view Swift’s next music video, as it forms part of The Official Release Party of a Showgirl. Occurring from Oct. 3 to Oct. 5, the 89-minute film also features behind-the-scenes clips of “The Fate of Ophelia” video, analyses of songs from The Life of a Showgirl, and fresh lyric videos.

But when will fans unable to attend The Official Release Party of a Showgirl be able to see “The Fate of Ophelia”?

What is the premiere date for “The Fate of Ophelia” on YouTube?

Written and directed by Swift, the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia” is set to debut on YouTube on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. ET. This launch aligns with the 36th birthday of Swift’s fiancé, Travis Kelce.

In the track, Swift reflects on how Kelce rescued her heart from facing the same fate as Hamlet‘s tragic heroine Ophelia, who is pushed to madness by Hamlet’s rejection and ultimately drowns. Fittingly, in the pre-chorus, Swift sings, “If you’d never come for me / I might’ve drowned in the melancholy.”

The Swifty-Ophelia link continues beyond “The Fate of Ophelia.” The album artwork for The Life of a Showgirl, which shows Swift partly submerged in water, alludes to painter John Everett Millais’ 19th-century artwork “Ophelia,” depicting Ophelia floating in a river.

As per Swift’s conversation with BBC Radio 1, “The Fate of Ophelia” music video also drew inspiration from Millais’ painting, completing the Ophelia allusion.
