Apple showcases Liquid Glass substitute in latest iOS beta: Tinted glass

With the introduction of the iOS 26.1 beta 4 update, both critics and advocates for accessibility can find reason to celebrate: Apple has made it easier for users to customize the Liquid Glass UI.

The Liquid Glass interface, which encountered some mild pushback from iPhone users moving to iOS 26, now provides Clear and Tinted modes. This enhancement is accessible to both mobile and desktop users and acts as a fallback for those who struggled with the Clear variant of the design.

To utilize the feature, beta users should navigate to the “Display & Brightness” menu within Settings to locate the new Liquid Glass option. On Mac devices, it’s found under “Appearance” in System Settings. The Tinted mode boosts the UI’s opacity, enhancing the readability of notifications and text.

This update is well-received, as numerous iOS 26 users voiced concerns regarding the interface’s translucency — and it appears Apple has taken notice. In a comment to TechCrunch, Apple indicated that input from beta testers highlighted the desire for increased customization for Liquid Glass.

Although the Appearance option will not be available to the public until the official iOS 26.1 release, it represents a significant improvement compared to prior options. Since users are unable to revert to iOS 26 or completely turn off Liquid Glass, the prior workaround involved adjusting Accessibility settings, lowering transparency, and modifying the home screen color for an improvised tinted appearance.
