Blumhouse to Transform Popular Horror Comic “Something Is Killing the Children”

Blumhouse Productions is broadening its horror catalog by securing the rights to the acclaimed Boom! Studios comic series “Something Is Killing the Children” created by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera. The storyline focuses on monster hunter Erica Slaughter, who possesses the ability to perceive monsters that are invisible to adults. She ventures to Archer’s Peak, Wisconsin, where horrifying beings are hunting the children of the town. The comics have achieved over five million copies sold internationally and have garnered several Eisner Awards.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Blumhouse acquired the rights to “Something Is Killing the Children” following a fierce bidding competition with entities like Lionsgate and Netflix. Initially, Netflix intended to adapt the series for television, bringing Mike Flanagan and Tracy Major from “The Haunting of Hill House” on board. After their departure, “Dark” showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese were designated to develop the series, but Netflix ultimately decided against the project in late 2024.

Blumhouse plans to produce a live-action feature film alongside an adult animated series inspired by “Something Is Killing the Children.” Tynion will take the helm of the TV series as director, while artist Dell’Edera will act as co-executive producer.

Through this initiative, Blumhouse seeks to maintain its successful streak of horror adaptations. Its 2021 interpretation of Joe Hill’s short story “The Black Phone” was a box office success, and its adaptation of the video game “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has become its highest-grossing film so far.
