The Nintendo Switch 2 Achieves Success with Pokémon Legends: Z-A

The Nintendo Switch 2 has experienced tremendous sales success since its debut in June, prompting consumers to start buying games for the new system.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A debuted concurrently on both Switch and Switch 2 a few weeks ago and is seeing remarkable sales figures, according to multiple sources. The first is The Pokémon Company itself, which revealed in a press release (via GameSpot) that the title moved 5.8 million copies in just the first week after its release. This is somewhat expected, but analyst Mat Piscatella from Circana also pointed out on Bluesky that the game achieved the highest physical retail launch of any video game in the U.S. in over two and a half years.

For additional context, Piscatella noted that the last game to match the performance of Legends: Z-A in physical stores was The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, another Nintendo exclusive, back in May of 2023. This figure does not even include digital sales, which represent a significant share of contemporary video game purchases. Piscatella did not share exact figures, but as GameSpot emphasized, Tears of the Kingdom sold 10 million units (combining physical and digital) in just three days. It’s safe to say Pokémon is performing exceptionally well if it’s nearing that benchmark.

The lineup of exclusives for the Switch 2 is steadily coming together, with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, Kirby Air Riders, and Metroid Prime 4 all set to launch before the year concludes. While these titles may not all reach Pokémon-level sales, expect Nintendo to be in a robust position by the time its upcoming quarterly earnings report is revealed.
