Google Maps Introduces Conversational Navigation Featuring Gemini

Google is launching new features in Maps powered by Gemini, aimed at improving navigation through a more conversational and intuitive method, as outlined in a blog post from the company on Wednesday.

The update introduces the initial hands-free, voice-activated navigation experience in Maps, leveraging Gemini along with Google’s vast real-world data. Users can now ask intricate, multi-step questions such as, “Are there any affordable restaurants with vegan choices along my route?” or “What is the parking situation there?” Gemini is also capable of handling personal tasks like setting up a calendar event for later.

Another addition is landmark-based navigation. Rather than vague directions like “turn right in 500 feet,” Gemini will reference real-world landmarks, giving instructions such as “turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant.” Google examined data from over 250 million locations and cross-checked Street View images to pinpoint significant landmarks.

Further updates feature proactive traffic notifications that alert drivers to road issues, even when they are not using navigation, and a new Lens mode that allows users to recognize and inquire about nearby locations using their camera and voice.

The Gemini-enhanced features will begin rolling out this month on Android and iOS in the U.S., with plans for wider availability in the near future.
