Among various menstrual tracking applications such as Flo and Natural Cycles, the menstrual health startup Joii is unveiling a groundbreaking feature: employing AI to assess menstrual blood volume in order to identify conditions like endometriosis, launching today in the UK.
As reported by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), one in three menstruators encounters excessive bleeding during their periods, which can signify painful conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, and adenomyosis. The diagnosis of endometriosis can span four to 11 years, with as many as 60 percent of instances going undiagnosed. Joii’s founder, Justyna Strzeszynska, developed the app following her own arduous path to a fibroids diagnosis.
The Joii Period Evaluation app is designed to leverage AI to track menstrual cycles and pinpoint possible issues for users to discuss with their healthcare providers.
To utilize this feature, users are required to purchase Joii Evaluation Pads, which come in both day and night variants, and download the app on iOS and Android devices. To evaluate blood volume and identify clots, users simply position their phone above the pad and scan using the app. The app identifies whether a day or night pad is in use and detects clots, as demonstrated in a video on the Joii website.
Additionally, the app enables tracking of other symptoms, including pelvic pain and fatigue.
“We already monitor our steps, observe our sleep, and keep track of our heart rate,” Strzeszynska remarked in a press release distributed to Mashable. “Assessing blood loss is just the subsequent step toward better comprehending our bodies and advocating for the care we deserve. Our goal is for every woman to possess evidence, not merely experience pain.”
In a five-month investigation involving 72 participants, 88 percent indicated that Joii would improve their discussions about menstrual volume with their healthcare provider, and just over half (52 percent) reported an increase in period health literacy after using the app.
