Survey Shows 97% of Individuals Are Unable to Tell Apart AI-Created Songs from Those Made by Humans

AI music is increasingly filling music streaming libraries, leading to dissatisfaction among many music fans. A recent study by French music streaming service Deezer and Ipsos indicates that 97 percent of participants could not differentiate a completely AI-generated song from one created by a human. Among those, 52 percent expressed discomfort about their inability to discern the difference.

AI-generated music has progressed considerably, yet the predictable nature of much popular music enables AI to imitate it more easily, especially regarding instrumentals.

The Deezer and Ipsos study reveals that individuals are not entirely opposed to AI. For example, 46 percent of respondents believed AI could help in discovering new music, and 66 percent were willing to explore AI music out of curiosity.

However, uneasiness emerges when individuals feel misled by AI music. The survey indicates that 80 percent desire AI music to be clearly marked on platforms, 72 percent want to be informed if a platform is suggesting AI-generated music, 45 percent would exclude AI music, and 40 percent would bypass it if encountered.

Music enthusiasts also perceive AI songs negatively in terms of artist support. The survey discovered that 65 percent are against AI training on copyrighted music, and 70 percent think AI jeopardizes artists’ livelihoods.

Only 11 percent believe AI music should receive equal consideration on leading music charts.

Criticism of AI-generated music primarily targets completely AI-generated songs. Artists and producers have historically utilized technology such as autotune, which still necessitates human contribution to achieve the final sound.

Deezer reports that approximately 50,000 fully AI-generated tracks are uploaded daily, accounting for 34 percent of daily music releases.

AI-generated creative works, including artwork and videos, have encountered criticism online. Certain platforms, such as Pinterest, permit users to filter out AI content entirely.

As AI-generated music develops and opposition increases, it will be fascinating to observe how platforms like Spotify and Deezer manage AI-generated music.
