Jimmy Kimmel presented an heartfelt monologue on his program to wrap up a tough year, in which late-night shows, including his own, faced scrutiny from Donald Trump, and Kimmel and his team experienced a heartbreaking personal tragedy.
Meanwhile, the central focus for late-night talk show hosts was the president’s primetime speech from the White House on Thursday, an 18-minute address that Kimmel scrutinized.
“The president had a limited window — his speech was cutting into the season finale of Survivor — so he spoke at a breakneck pace. He was yelling. He was speeding through the script. It was 18 consecutive minutes of him shouting. It was as if the entire nation got to feel what it was like to be Eric in the eighth grade.”
Throughout the address, Trump reiterated false assertions that have been disproven, from his claim that “inflation has halted, wages are up, prices are down,” to his assertion that he has “resolved eight conflicts in 10 months.”
“There were countless untruths,” Kimmel remarked. “11 fact checkers perished while watching that speech last night. He crammed a lot of nonsense into those 18 minutes.”
