Donald Trump presented an 18-minute address during prime time from the White House on Thursday evening, amidst Christmas trees. Seth Meyers, alongside Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, provided analysis on the speech.
“It’s that time of year,” Meyers remarked on the final Late Night of the year, “a moment to be with family, spread joy, exchange gifts, and, naturally, receive a tongue-lashing from the president.”
In his “A Closer Look” segment, Meyers examined the events leading up to Trump’s address, including the present condition of the U.S. economy and the president’s falling approval numbers. He then turned his attention to the speech, emphasizing Trump’s boisterous tone.
“Quit shouting at us, grandpa!” Meyers joked. “If you prefer we don’t come to visit you at the retirement home this Christmas, we’ll remain where we are.”
Meyers also commented on the misleading assertions in Trump’s address, like his claim that “inflation has halted, wages have risen, prices are reduced.”
“The address was so erratic and packed with falsehoods that CNN’s Fact Checker couldn’t keep pace,” Meyers stated, showing clips of CNN’s Daniel Dale refuting Trump’s assertions. He wrapped up with a powerful remark:
“Americans are facing challenges with rising expenses and a sluggish economy, and instead of demonstrating compassion and proposing solutions, Trump’s merely reprimanding everyone through the television.”
