What transpired with baby Jane? I’m not merely referring to Joan Crawford films; I’m intrigued by Jane Driscoll (Nicole Brydon Bloom) in Paradise Season 2. More specifically, what was going on with the cold open of episode 6 concerning Jane’s birth?
The episode, aptly titled “Jane,” brings us back to May 29, 1997, when Circuit City worker Don (Francois Battiste) receives a peculiar email from AlexQ. It states, “A KILLER WILL BE BORN ON JUNE 6 AT 12:01. SHE CAN BE STOPPED WHEN IT MATTERS IF YOU DELIVER A MESSAGE TO HER.”
AlexQ continues to send Don messages via email, instant messenger, phone, and pager. Instead of brushing them off, Don takes them seriously and heads to the hospital in June. There, he encounters newborn Jane and her mother (Laura Campbell) as they exit, asserting that baby Jane will turn out to be a killer and he bears a message to prevent her. (Did Don really question every mother about their baby’s birth time, or was he just fortunate?)
Do we discover what the message is? Unfortunately, no. Don is too preoccupied with yelling that he has a message to actually convey it. We also do not see the content of any messages in the emails or texts that Don receives. Smart move, Paradise! Still, this message enigma connects with some of the larger questions of the season.
Paradise must involve time travel, right?
Since Season 2 commenced, I’ve had a suspicion that Paradise encompasses time travel or multiversal shenanigans. Episode 6 essentially confirms this, as how else would someone be aware of Jane’s precise birth date and time? How could they know she would evolve into a killer? And how would they know how to avert that?
It appears that something important will develop regarding Jane in upcoming episodes, and whoever is involved will somehow manage to contact Don in the past.
Paradise Season 2, I repeat, who is Alex?
Who could that possibly be? Judging by the username, it could be someone named AlexQ, bringing us back to the season’s most pressing question: Who is Alex? Up till now, the only Alex we’ve encountered is the deceased wife (Gwen Holloway) of professor and Vestige Quantum proprietor Henry Miller (Patrick Fischler). Nevertheless, in 1997, Alex would still be alive, thus she could relay the information about Jane to Don. (If that’s the case, perhaps the Q in her username signifies Quantum?) But how did she obtain the information about Jane initially?
Alex is also associated with the clandestine project Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson) is working on. Perhaps Sinatra, sensing a threat from Jane, sent the message back in time to stop Jane from ultimately killing her?
While pondering Alex’s identity, we must also query, who is Don? I doubt Alex (regardless of who they are) would instruct just anyone to inform a newborn that she is a killer. Don must have some connection to this plot, yet it seems Paradise will leave us in suspense for at least another episode.
Paradise is currently streaming on Hulu, with new episodes released every Monday.
